In a significant statement following the regular session of the Fez District Council held on Monday, January 13, 2025, the First Vice President of the council, Mohamed Al-Mahboub, emphasized the urgent need for responsible local authorities to address the ongoing issues affecting the district, particularly the growing concern of “graves upon graves” which has caused widespread dissatisfaction within the local community.
In his conversation with the press, Al-Mahboub explained that the district has recently witnessed a troubling phenomenon of “graves upon graves,” an issue stemming from overcrowding in some cemeteries due to the continued rise in the number of deaths and the lack of sufficient space to expand burial areas. He stressed that this situation requires immediate intervention from relevant authorities to provide new land for cemeteries and to implement innovative solutions for reorganizing this sector, which has become a major challenge.
Al-Mahboub also mentioned that the Provincial Council had previously partnered with a local association dedicated to the maintenance and cleaning of cemeteries, and significant work had been carried out to improve the state of the city’s cemeteries, including painting graves and repairing deteriorated tombstones. This initiative received widespread approval from residents, as Al-Mahboub noted that “the reward lies with God” – underscoring the council’s commitment to the public good and enhancing the conditions surrounding burial sites.
