Dozens of Moroccan trucks engaged in international freight transport came under armed attack from armed groups in the “Niourou du Sahel” area, located on the border between Mali and Mauritania, during the night from Monday to Tuesday. The attack resulted in significant material damage but no injuries or fatalities among the drivers.
According to available information, around 30 Moroccan trucks were parked in the area when clashes erupted between armed gangs and the Malian army, leading to gunfire directed at the trucks. The drivers fled to safe locations before returning after the Malian army regained control of the area. The General Staff of the Malian Armed Forces stated that they managed to repel an attack carried out by a large number of terrorists, noting that these attackers infiltrated the city with internal support.
Sharqi Al-Hashimi, the national secretary of the General Union of International and National Transport Professionals, called on Moroccan authorities to provide protection for Moroccan drivers in West Africa, especially at the crossing between Mali and Mauritania. Al-Hashimi emphasized that this incident reflects the ongoing suffering of drivers due to deteriorating security conditions in the region.
In a related context, the statement issued by the Malian army indicated that the confrontation involved intense gunfire, resulting in vehicle destruction and focused security operations to prevent such incidents from recurring.
