During a parliamentary session held on Monday, January 6, 2025, Leila Benali, Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, provided a comprehensive explanation regarding the recurring power outages in rural areas. The minister clarified that these outages stem from various causes, including scheduled interruptions for preventive maintenance, unscheduled disruptions due to technical faults, severe weather conditions, or acts of vandalism.
The minister highlighted that unauthorized electricity usage, such as direct connections without meters and failure to comply with safety regulations, is one of the primary causes of frequent network failures.
She further explained that certain times of the year, particularly summer and autumn, experience a significant increase in electricity consumption. This surge is often driven by the intensive use of irrigation pumps and unregulated collective use of electric water heaters.
Minister Benali assured that the ministry, in collaboration with the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water and local authorities, has allocated investments amounting to 30 billion MAD to strengthen the electrical grid and ensure service sustainability. She called on residents to adhere to the regulations governing electricity consumption and observe safety standards to minimize disruptions and maintain a high-quality electricity supply.
