Doctor and Nurse Convicted of Extortion and Bribery in Taza

The Court of First Instance in the Moroccan city of Taza has issued its verdict in a corruption case that shook the city’s health sector, convicting a doctor and a nurse working at Ibn Baja Regional Hospital on charges of extortion and bribery.

The court sentenced the doctor to three months of enforceable imprisonment and a fine of 5,000 dirhams, while the nurse received a sentence of one month of enforceable imprisonment and a fine of 2,000 dirhams.

The details of the case date back to the beginning of this month when authorities received a report through the green number designated for reporting corruption. The suspects were caught red-handed receiving a bribe of 1,400 dirhams. Consequently, the doctor was prosecuted by the public prosecutor’s office in a state of arrest, while the trainee nurse was released on bail.

The doctor was charged with soliciting and accepting money in exchange for performing his official duties, while the nurse was prosecuted for participating in these illegal acts.

This conviction comes as part of efforts to combat corruption in the health sector and promote integrity in public services. The case serves as a stark reminder of the necessity to adhere to professional ethics and the law in all sectors, especially in the healthcare field, which directly affects citizens’ lives.
