On Sunday, December 15, 2024, the Democratic Confederation of Labor (CDT) in Fes-Moulay Yacoub organized a successful protest in front of its headquarters in Fes. The demonstration aimed to express opposition to several government projects and decisions that the union views as direct threats to social achievements and labor rights. The protest witnessed significant participation from union members, workers’ representatives, and citizens, all voicing their discontent with government policies targeting fundamental workers’ rights.
Protesters chanted slogans condemning the proposed law criminalizing the right to strike, calling it an attempt to restrict union freedoms and undermine the constitutional right to protest. They also strongly opposed the merger of the National Fund for Social Welfare Organizations (CNOPS) into the National Social Security Fund (CNSS), arguing that this move would degrade the quality of healthcare services and increase the suffering of beneficiaries.
Participants emphasized that the ongoing surge in living costs, the stagnation of social dialogue, and the government’s failure to fulfill previous agreements reflect a lack of political will to promote social peace. Concerns were also raised about pension system reforms, which they see as a direct threat to the stability of the working class and an exacerbation of retirees’ financial vulnerabilities.
At the conclusion of the protest, participants declared that this demonstration was just the first step in a series of upcoming actions. They sent a strong message to the government, demanding the reversal of what they called unfair decisions and urging respect for its commitments to social dialogue.
