Government Highlights Progress in Healthcare Coverage and Social Protection in Morocco

During the weekly press conference held on Thursday, December 12, 2024, following the government council meeting, government spokesperson Mustapha Baitas outlined significant developments in Morocco’s healthcare coverage and social protection initiatives.

One of the key topics addressed by Baitas was the accurate statistics on healthcare coverage under the “RAMED” system. He clarified that the actual number of beneficiaries is 11 million, contrasting with the previously cited cumulative figure of 18 million.

He explained that this 11 million represents about 30% of Morocco’s population, reflecting the government’s ongoing efforts to expand healthcare coverage nationwide. Baitas emphasized that the Moroccan government remains committed to providing free healthcare coverage for eligible beneficiaries, noting that approximately 11,048,656 individuals unable to afford subscription costs are now covered under the system, significantly alleviating burdens on vulnerable and disadvantaged groups.

Baitas highlighted that the government, under the directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, is actively engaged in the comprehensive social protection program, a national priority. While acknowledging that these initiatives are still in their early stages, he affirmed the government’s dedication to continuous system improvements. Baitas pointed to Morocco’s achievements in economic reforms and infrastructure development as catalysts for accelerating social reforms. He reiterated the country’s commitment to expanding and enhancing social protection to reach a broader population while ensuring the financial sustainability of the system.

Regarding retirees, Baitas noted that measures have been introduced to improve their conditions, including pension increases and additional benefits. Adjustments to the Moroccan Pension Fund have also been implemented to ensure the long-term sustainability of this vital pillar of social protection.

In conclusion, Baitas assured that the government is steadfast in its mission to enhance and optimize Morocco’s healthcare coverage and social protection systems. He emphasized that further measures would be introduced to ensure all citizens benefit from these services. Acknowledging the complexity of implementing such systems, he stated, “We are undertaking a long and ambitious project, but we are on the right track to achieving significant advancements in the well-being of Moroccan citizens.” Baitas reaffirmed the government’s commitment to exerting the necessary efforts to realize this goal.
