Appointment of Zouhair Chorfi as President of the National Electricity Regulatory Authority: A Career Rich with High-Ranking Positions

In a move reflecting the royal trust in national competencies, the Moroccan Royal Cabinet announced the appointment of Mr. Zouhair Chorfi as President of the National Electricity Regulatory Authority (ANRE) by His Majesty King Mohammed VI. This appointment crowns a professional career full of achievements and high-ranking positions in the kingdom’s financial and administrative sectors.

Chorfi began his professional journey as a financial inspector in the General Inspectorate of Finance from 1985 to 1988, then progressed through multiple leadership positions. He held the position of head of the financial incentives department, then head of the monetary studies department, up to heading the monetary studies and banking regulation division.

In 1999, he assumed the position of deputy director of the Treasury and External Finance, before being appointed director of the Treasury and External Finance in 2003. In June 2010, he took over the management of Customs and Indirect Taxes until October 2017.

Chorfi’s career path saw a remarkable development in November 2017 when he was appointed Secretary-General of the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Administration Reform. In May 2020, he took the position of director of the Finance Minister’s cabinet until October 2021, then became a member of the Supervisory Board of Crédit du Maroc since December 2022.

In addition to these high positions, Chorfi was a member of the Bank Al-Maghrib Council, a board member of the Moroccan Capital Market Authority, and a board member of the Banque Centrale Populaire. He also held administrative positions in the Morocco and United Arab Emirates Development Company, and the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa.

His international career was crowned by his presidency of the World Customs Organization Council during 2014 and 2015, reflecting international confidence in Moroccan competencies.

The appointment of Zouhair Chorfi to this new position confirms the importance of accumulated expertise in managing vital sectors of the national economy and heralds a new phase of development and regulation in the kingdom’s electricity sector.
