In a public session held on Monday, November 25, 2024, members of Parliament discussed the efforts made by the Ministry of the Interior to tackle the challenges posed by the winter season, particularly in rural and mountainous areas affected by cold waves and snowfall. This discussion was part of the ongoing implementation of the royal directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, which aim to mitigate the impact of these harsh weather conditions on isolated populations.
In his intervention during the session, Minister of the Interior, Mr. Abdelouafi Laftit, emphasized the vital role played by the national plan to mitigate the effects of cold waves, a plan that is updated annually based on precise field data. He explained that the strategy focuses on supporting populations in remote areas, ensuring the provision of essential services during these difficult periods. The Minister highlighted direct interventions in various sectors, including health, where 466 medical convoys benefited over 48,000 individuals.
The Minister also addressed the efforts made to distribute food rations, winter clothing, and animal feed to needy families, as well as providing firewood and coal, in addition to distributing improved stoves in targeted areas. Regarding road clearance operations, the Minister explained that these efforts aimed to facilitate mobility and ensure access to essential services.
One of the key announcements made during the session was the expansion of the national plan to cover 185 additional villages, taking into account the specific needs of areas affected by recent earthquakes and floods, for which special measures have been allocated. The Ministry also focused on villages at risk of severe isolation, prioritizing interventions in the most at-risk areas, where isolation could last for more than four days.
In conclusion, the Minister affirmed that the Ministry would continue to monitor the situation closely and coordinate efforts between various government sectors to ensure the effective implementation of these measures. He added that the Ministry would respond swiftly to any emergencies in the targeted areas.
These efforts, announced during the session, reflect the state’s commitment to addressing natural challenges that may affect the lives of citizens in rural areas, in line with the royal directives that ensure the well-being and safety of all citizens, particularly during harsh winter conditions.
