During the public session on Monday, November 25, 2024, in the House of Representatives, lawmakers raised critical issues concerning Morocco’s education sector. One of the main topics of discussion was the rising tuition fees in private schools, along with persistent problems in early education and supplementary education.
The session began with a focus on early childhood education, where a lawmaker highlighted the challenges facing this sector, pointing out that many educators and associations responsible for early education do not always meet their social obligations. He stressed that the sector is still facing significant shortcomings in providing effective educational services for children and called for greater focus on addressing these issues, citing the example of the Ain Chock district in Casablanca to illustrate gaps in implementation on the ground. Minister of National Education, Pre-School, and Sports, Mr. Mohamed Saad Barada, expressed his interest in these concerns and assured the lawmakers that he would review them and provide a response as soon as possible.
The second major issue raised was the growing financial burden on Moroccan families due to high tuition fees at private schools. In response to a question from a member of the Democratic Constitutional and Social team, Minister Barada clarified that the ministry is taking steps to regulate these rising fees. He explained that regulations are being put in place to monitor annual fee increases and ensure transparency in the determination of these fees, aiming to ease the financial burden on families.
The session also addressed the ongoing delays in providing oral responses during parliamentary sessions. Several lawmakers voiced their dissatisfaction with the repeated postponements and emphasized the need for clear and immediate answers during oral question sessions, rather than relying on promises of written responses at a later time. Minister Barada assured the lawmakers that the ministry would take these comments into consideration and work on resolving the issue, reaffirming his commitment to addressing the concerns raised.
In conclusion, the lawmakers emphasized the importance of improving the quality of education at all levels, from pre-school to secondary and higher education. They reiterated that education is the cornerstone of building Morocco’s future.
