In a significant development concerning the “Spoiled Khlia” network, the Public Prosecutor at the Fez Court of First Instance ordered the detention of 14 individuals yesterday. They face charges related to the possession and preparation of “khlia” (a preserved meat delicacy) under conditions that endanger consumer safety, alongside attempts to distribute the product locally, nationally, and internationally.
The case, which has sparked widespread controversy, began with meticulous investigations carried out by the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST).
Coordinated police operations subsequently targeted secret storage facilities across various neighborhoods in Fez. These efforts led to the seizure of 9 tons and 360 kilograms of spoiled “khlia” prepared in unlicensed facilities using half a ton of meat that lacked veterinary inspection.
The suspects were presented to the Prosecutor General, who referred the case to the Prosecutor of the Court of First Instance due to jurisdictional requirements. Following interrogations, formal charges were filed, and the case was transferred to the Misdemeanor Court for trial proceedings. In total, 20 individuals were investigated, with 14 detained and the remainder temporarily released.
This case highlights the risks posed by food fraud and its impact on public health. The upcoming trial is expected to reveal further details about the network’s activities and methods of compromising food safety for consumers.
