Residents of the villages of Oulad Taunza, Oulad Abdallah, and Al-Makaret in the Southern Akznaiya commune, Taza province, have submitted a complaint to the Aknoul district chief demanding action regarding the harmful effects of a nearby landfill.
In their complaint, residents detailed that the landfill is causing serious health and environmental damage, including:
- Continuous emission of foul odors
- Release of toxic fumes polluting the air
- Heavy insect infestation
- Groundwater contamination due to wastewater flowing near drinking wells
The residents outlined five main demands in their complaint:
- Relocating the waste dump to the provincial landfill away from residential areas
- Addressing the wastewater issue threatening drinking water and agricultural land
- Providing the area with a clean drinking water network
- Improving infrastructure to end the area’s isolation
- Supporting school transportation for primary school students
The residents pointed out that their area has not adequately benefited from the state’s programs designed to end isolation in remote areas. They called on local authorities to intervene urgently to protect the environment and public health, and to achieve sustainable development in the region.
The complainants emphasized that these issues particularly affect vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly, stressing the need for immediate action to address these environmental and public health concerns that directly impact their daily lives.
