Nora Achahbar, the Dutch State Secretary for Taxes and Customs at the Ministry of Finance, officially tendered her resignation in a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Achahar stated that her decision was driven by her inability to continue her role amidst the increasingly polarized political climate in the Netherlands.
Achahbar, who joined the government last summer, expressed a strong motivation to address the child benefits scandal a crisis she described as one of the most tragic episodes in the country’s administrative history.
The scandal, involving false accusations of fraud and indirect discrimination, severely impacted thousands of families across the Netherlands. Her primary goal was to rebuild trust between the government and society while upholding principles of justice and humanity.
In her resignation letter, Achahbar highlighted that the escalating political polarization in recent weeks made it impossible for her to work effectively or achieve her objectives.
She warned that political polarization poses a significant threat to social cohesion, turning disagreements into conflicts and complicating collective efforts to achieve societal goals.
She confirmed that she had requested King Willem-Alexander to accept her resignation, with the Prime Minister referring the request to the relevant authorities.
Achhbar’s resignation deals another blow to the Dutch government, which continues to grapple with mounting challenges in regaining public trust and addressing societal and political crises.
