Sports Journalist Associations in Morocco Demand Halt to Controversial “Stadium Pass” Policy

In a joint meeting held on Tuesday, November 5, the executive boards of the Moroccan Association of Sports Journalism (AMJS) and the Moroccan League of Sports Journalists (MLJS) unanimously agreed to take decisive action against what they described as the “Stadium Pass” scandal.

Attendees at the meeting argued that this new pass represents an alarming precedent in Morocco, violating the fundamental rights and freedoms of sports journalists.

The meeting included a decision to formally address a letter to Fouzi Lekjaa, President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), and to Abdel-Salam Belkchour, President of the National Professional Football League (LNFP), requesting urgent intervention to halt what they called an “unlawful and misguided” approach in implementing the “Stadium Pass.”

In a joint statement, the associations declared that the pass violates press freedom principles, conflicting with national and international laws guaranteeing journalists’ rights to practice their profession freely and without undue restrictions.

The statement also highlighted that the “Stadium Pass” poses a serious threat to the independence of sports journalism, placing obstacles in the way of journalists who aim to cover sports events objectively. It emphasized that Moroccan sports journalism remains committed to its educational and informative roles, striving to accurately represent the sports landscape without bias or pressure.

The statement concluded with a call for all relevant authorities to reconsider this decision and to respect international agreements and national laws that protect press freedom.
