The 49th Anniversary of the Green March: A Glorious Epic on the Path to Completing Territorial Integrity

Rabat – The Moroccan people are celebrating, on Wednesday, in an atmosphere of fervent enthusiasm and constant mobilization, the 49th anniversary of the Green March, a landmark event in the annals of the national struggle for the completion of the territorial integrity of the Kingdom.

Initiated by the genius of the Late His Majesty King Hassan II to liberate the southern provinces from Spanish colonial rule, this event will remain engraved forever in the history of Morocco as it embodies the exemplary symbiosis between the Alaouite Throne and the Moroccan people, and the unanimity around the constants and sacred values of the nation.

On November 6, 1975, masses of volunteers armed with their faith converged from all regions of the country in an organized manner towards the southern provinces to write, in a patriotic surge, one of the most beautiful pages of Morocco’s struggle to complete its territorial integrity.

The commemoration of this anniversary, rich in lessons, is certainly an opportunity to recall past glories, but also and above all to continue the mobilization to consolidate the foundations of a modern Morocco, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

In front of immense crowds armed with the Holy Quran and the national flag, the colonial authorities had no choice but to bow to the will of the King and the people and proclaim the end of the colonization of the southern provinces.

This event, which marked a historical turning point, reflects the determination, the will and the faith of the Moroccans, as well as their total mobilization for the recovery of their usurped lands.

The glorious epic of liberation unfolded in a peaceful and orderly manner, driven by the unshakable faith of the volunteers in the justice of their cause and Morocco’s right to recover its southern provinces.

The national flag was hoisted in the sky of Laayoune on February 28, 1976, followed by the recovery of Oued Ed-dahab on August 14, 1979, thus marking the end of foreign occupation and presence in these provinces.

Today, this epic continues relentlessly with constant efforts to thwart the maneuvers of the adversaries of the territorial integrity of the Kingdom, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

Morocco remains determined to defend its legitimate rights, asserting its unanimity around its territorial integrity, its resolute will to defend the Moroccanness of its Sahara, and its serious commitment to putting an end to this artificial regional dispute vainly maintained by the Kingdom’s adversaries who oppose Morocco’s right to its territory.

The Green March also continues with the launch of a new dynamic of development that makes the southern provinces one of the regions of the Kingdom with the best results in terms of social achievements, health and housing services, growth, employment, and economic attractiveness.

Thanks to the ambitious economic development model launched by the Sovereign, the Moroccan Sahara is on its way to becoming a true regional and international hub and a gateway between the Kingdom and its African depth.
