Moroccan Sports Journalists Union Condemns Defamation Campaign and Calls for Profession Protection

The Moroccan Sports Journalists Union and the Moroccan Association of Professional Sports Photography issued a joint statement on Monday, November 4, 2024, following an emergency meeting in Casablanca, denouncing what they described as a “systematic defamation campaign” targeting sports journalism associations and their figures.

The statement, signed by Abdelhadi Naji, President of the Moroccan Sports Journalists Union, and Abdelkader Belmeki, President of the Photographers Association, expressed their absolute rejection of what they considered “attempts to undermine the credibility of sports journalism work” that extends for more than fifty years.

The meeting addressed several developments, including preparations for the third session of the International Conference on Combating Sports Violence, with the participation of experts and academics from French Sorbonne, Spanish Juan Carlos, and Portuguese universities.

The attendees emphasized the need to confront what they described as “illegal practices and serious accusations,” expressing their confidence in the intervention of Fouzi Lekjaa, President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, to find an urgent solution to the current crisis.

The statement affirmed the commitment of Moroccan sports media to continue its professional mission within the framework guaranteed by the constitution and law, while preserving the right of affected parties to take necessary legal measures to defend their rights.
