On Wednesday, Meta introduced its first prototype of augmented reality (AR) glasses, “Orion,” which integrate AI technology in a bold attempt to create a new computing platform beyond traditional PCs and smartphones.
The “Orion” glasses feature a built-in camera and headphones, along with a voice-controlled smart assistant, resembling the already available “Meta Ray-Ban” smart glasses.
These advanced glasses enable users to view videos, screens, and even 3D images of people without the need for a bulky headset that isolates them from their surroundings.
Speaking at the unveiling event in Meta’s California headquarters, CEO Mark Zuckerberg called the glasses “a time-travel machine, offering us a glimpse into an exciting future.”
He noted that the glasses represent the culmination of a decade-long effort by Meta’s innovation team to develop lightweight glasses (under 100 grams) capable of displaying clear and large visuals for various applications.
Users can control the glasses via voice commands and hand gestures, with future potential to incorporate mind control through wristband sensors.
“We need a device that transmits signals directly from the brain,” Zuckerberg explained.
Jeremy Goldman, an analyst at eMarketer, described the “Orion” glasses as Meta’s bet on a post-smartphone future.
He emphasized that their success will depend on how effectively they simplify daily life and at what cost. He added, “If Meta harnesses real-time AI in a seamless way, these glasses could be more than just a flashy gadget.”
