A statement issued today by the Dominican Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that Dominican President Luis Abinader has expressed his country’s strong support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara. This came during a meeting between President Abinader and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, who attended the Dominican President’s inauguration ceremony as a representative of King Mohammed VI.
The statement clarified that President Abinader tasked Bourita with conveying a message to the Moroccan monarch stating that “the Dominican Republic strongly supports Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, and intends to prioritize opening a consulate in the city of Dakhla within its future expansion plans.”
The Dominican President also reaffirmed that his country “considers the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco as the only solution to the Sahara dispute.”
During the meeting, which took place at the National Palace, Bourita conveyed King Mohammed VI’s congratulations to President Abinader and his wishes for success in his new term. He also conveyed the Moroccan monarch’s invitation to the Dominican President for an official visit to Morocco, considering it an opportunity to establish a framework for deepening bilateral relations in various fields.
For his part, President Abinader confirmed his desire to strengthen bilateral relations in all areas, expressing his intention to visit Morocco in response to King Mohammed VI’s invitation.
This development comes within the framework of Morocco’s diplomatic efforts to gain more international support for its position on the Sahara issue and to strengthen its relations with Latin American countries.
