According to a recent official report published by the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, eight beach areas in the Tangier Tetouan Al Hoceima region have been identified as non-conforming and unfit for bathing.
These include the beaches of Calabonita, Quemado, Sbadia, Torres, Admirals (Playa Blanca), Tanger Medina, Jbeila, and Sidi Qassem.
The ranking is based on bathing water quality management criteria, where water pollution due to wastewater discharges, high density of vacationers, lack of sanitary equipment, and the negative effects of climate change were detected.
According to the report, polluted water flows into these beaches through waterways that directly reach them, making them unfit for bathing during the 2024 season.
The report includes proposals to improve the situation, including strengthening the wastewater disinfection system in coastal areas and maintaining the infrastructure and sewage network at the beaches.
The report comes within the framework of the National Bathing Water Quality Monitoring Program, which aims to assess the quality of beach water, ensure the safety of vacationers and preserve the marine environment.
