4 dead and 26 injured in the fire at the Al-Dabbagh cafeteria in Fez

Fez, Morocco – 6 June 2024 – The city of Fez witnessed a real tragedy on Wednesday evening after a huge fire broke out in the ‘Caesarea El Dabbagh’, located in the Bab Fattouh district in the heart of the old city.

In a preliminary toll, the horrific fire resulted in 4 painful deaths, while 26 people sustained injuries of varying severity, 10 of whom were taken to the University Hospital in Fez for treatment, including 3 cases described as critical, while 16 others suffered from minor cases of suffocation.

The flames destroyed around 25 shops inside the cafeteria, leaving behind heavy material losses.

According to preliminary investigations, the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit resulting from internal repair work that was being carried out in one of the shops.

The authorities have launched an extensive investigation to uncover the exact circumstances of the fire and determine who is responsible.

The Dabbagh Caesarea is one of the most important historical and commercial landmarks in the city of Fez, known for its leather craftsmanship and trade.

The city is currently in a state of grief for the victims of this tragic fire, while rescue and firefighting teams continue to search and ensure that there are no other victims.
