King Mohammed VI: The reprisals committed in the Gaza Strip revealed serious violations of international law

King Mohammed VI on Thursday reaffirmed his firm support for the Palestinian people to regain their legitimate rights and establish their independent sovereign state, and his determination to keep the Palestinian issue at the centre of any action aimed at establishing a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.

Addressing the 33rd Arab League Summit, which opened in Manama, Bahrain, the King said: ‘We affirm our permanent support for the brotherly Palestinian people to recover their legitimate rights and establish their independent sovereign state on the borders of 4 June 1967, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, on the basis of the two-state solution.’

At this difficult time for the Palestinian cause, following Israel’s blatant aggression on the Gaza Strip, ‘we are more determined to keep the Palestinian cause at the centre of any action aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace in the Middle East,’ the King said.

In his speech, read by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, the King added that ‘the reprisals committed in the Gaza Strip revealed serious violations that contravene the provisions of international law and international humanitarian law,’ reiterating his strong condemnation of the killing of innocent people.

The King also reiterated the unacceptable nature of imposing a new reality in the Gaza Strip and attempts to forcibly displace Palestinians, as these actions only exacerbate the situation and generate more violence and instability.

Noting that the Gaza Strip is an integral part of the Palestinian Territory and a unified Palestinian state, His Majesty emphasised the need for rapid and sustained delivery of humanitarian aid to Palestinians across the Gaza Strip, and intensified protection of unarmed civilians.

‘As Chairman of the Jerusalem Committee, we will continue, in close coordination with our brother H.E. Mahmoud Abbas, President of the State of Palestine, to do everything in our power to preserve the legal status and the historical and cultural character of the Holy City,’ His Majesty stressed.

In this regard, His Majesty expressed his desire to continue the field work carried out by Bait Mal Al-Quds Agency, the executive arm of the Jerusalem Committee, by implementing concrete programmes and projects aimed at preserving the cultural identity of the Holy City and improving the social status and living conditions of the Jerusalemite population in order to help them withstand and remain in the Holy City.

With regard to the painful and regrettable situations prevailing in some brotherly Arab countries, the King stressed that the Kingdom of Morocco fosters hope for the return of stability to these countries through dialogue and peaceful initiatives, away from the logic of force and military options, in order to find concrete, effective and lasting solutions.
