The country of Mali announced in a statement on Sunday that it had recalled its ambassador to Algeria in protest against the downing of a reconnaissance aircraft near the Algerian border.
In a similar move, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger also announced the recall of their ambassadors from Algeria for consultations.
Algeria’s Ministry of Defense had declared last Tuesday that a unit from the Algerian Air Defense had downed an armed unmanned reconnaissance aircraft after it had breached Algerian airspace by two kilometers near the border town of Tin Zaouatine in the far south.
It is noteworthy that the incident comes at a sensitive time, bringing to the forefront the long-standing tensions between Algeria and Mali over regional security issues, which exacerbates the current situation and raises questions about the future development of relations between the two countries.
