The Moroccan Ministry of the Interior has affirmed its commitment to taxis as the sole partner in urban mobility app projects. This comes after the Wali of the Eastern Region, Governor of Angad Prefectural, granted a license to “ITECHIA TV” to engage in connecting customers with taxi drivers via modern technological means.
This license has been granted for a period of five years, with the licensee committed to respecting Prefectural Decision No. 399, which pertains to the organization and rehabilitation of the taxi transportation sector within the jurisdiction of the Oujda Prefecture, and all applicable laws in this regard.
For his part, Fahd Makwar, the founding president of “ITECHIA TV,” revealed negotiations with authorities in other regions of the Kingdom to obtain similar licenses, particularly in Casablanca. Makwar emphasized that the app provided by the company is 100% Moroccan, developed and designed by Moroccan talents, and that its databases will remain within the Kingdom.
Makwar noted that the Moroccan app will be characterized by privacy when providing services to customers, citing the feature of consenting to pick up other passengers during trips. He also added that the new app will be linked to an electronic payment wallet, which will contribute to enhancing the financial inclusion of taxi drivers and maintaining value chains within the Kingdom.
Makwar clarified that the transportation tariff will vary based on order times, distance, and geographical areas, emphasizing the app designers’ keenness to respect the privacy of the Moroccan customer. Regarding the possibility of opening the app to private drivers, Makwar indicated that coordination with professional and labor organizations of drivers will facilitate the success of the technological tool in achieving its objectives.
Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, had pledged to work on “finding solutions jointly as soon as possible to the taxi and app transportation crisis.” Laftit considered that “the existence of the latter cannot be ignored, nor can we suffice with traditional models of taxi management through licensing systems.” The Minister of the Interior revealed that his ministry is currently conducting “necessary studies” in this regard, explaining that “soon, we will come to sit and find solutions together, to implement smart methods that allow citizens to benefit well from transportation services within cities.”
