Global Outage of ChatGPT Service Due to New Image Feature… OpenAI Faces Legal and Environmental Criticisms

On Sunday, March 30, 2025, OpenAI experienced an unprecedented surge in demand for its services following the release of a new image generation feature that allows users to create images in the famous Studio Ghibli animation style. This led to a partial outage of the ChatGPT service worldwide.

According to Downdetector, more than 500 reports were logged regarding login issues by midday. The feature, which allows users to convert images into a distinctive animated style, caused a massive strain on server resources.

In a comment on the X platform, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described the demand for the feature as “exceptional and beyond all expectations,” adding that his team “needed sleep” after the enormous pressure, referring to the significant efforts made to address the technical crisis.

Amid this surge, legal questions were raised regarding OpenAI’s use of an artistic style resembling the works of Studio Ghibli, with challenges in taking direct legal action, as “artistic style” itself is not classified as a legally protected right, unlike characters or stories.

In addition to the legal challenges, the immense pressure on data centers raised renewed environmental concerns. The advanced image generation processes rely on high energy consumption and intense cooling capacities, prompting environmental experts to warn about the future impact of these technologies on energy consumption and environmental sustainability.

These developments further emphasize that, despite its remarkable capabilities, artificial intelligence still faces technical, legal, and ethical challenges amid its rapid global expansion.
