French President Emmanuel Macron, in a telephone call on Sunday, urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “end the strikes on Gaza and return to a ceasefire,” as Israel continues its bombardment of the Palestinian territory.
Macron wrote on the “X” platform: “I called on the Israeli Prime Minister to end the strikes on Gaza and return to a ceasefire, which Hamas must accept. I stressed the need for humanitarian aid to resume immediately.”
This comes as Netanyahu called on Hamas to lay down its arms, while Israel continues its bombardment, with airstrikes on Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip killing at least 17 people.
A fragile truce that took effect on January 19 after 15 months of war collapsed on March 18 when Israel resumed its aerial bombardment and ground offensive on the Palestinian territory.
In a related context, Macron also called on Israel to “strictly respect the ceasefire” in Lebanon, after Israel bombed the southern suburbs of Beirut on Friday for the first time after four months of truce.
The French President added: “This demand is directed to all parties to ensure the safety of civilian populations on both sides of the Blue Line” between Israel and Lebanon.
Macron, who received Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in Paris on Friday, reiterated his call to “restore Lebanon’s full sovereignty. This includes a complete Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory and support for restoring the state’s monopoly on weapons.”
“After my discussions with the Lebanese President on Friday and this discussion with the Israeli Prime Minister, we decided to work together” on Lebanon, the French President wrote.
He also indicated that he discussed with Netanyahu “the stabilization of Syria and the restoration of its full sovereignty,” after speaking on Friday with interim Syrian President Ahmed Al-Ardah.
