Morocco Strengthens Measures to Confront Locust Threat After Detecting Limited Swarms in Southeast

Amidst concerning developments related to locust outbreaks in neighboring countries, particularly in the African Sahel and Northwest Africa, Moroccan authorities have heightened their preparedness to counter any potential movement of locust swarms towards Moroccan territory.

The Ministry of the Interior announced, in a statement, the detection of limited locust swarms in certain southeastern regions of the Kingdom. Promptly, necessary preventive measures have been taken to combat any potential threat.

The Ministry emphasized that the current situation is under control and does not warrant alarm, noting the activation of command centers in all relevant provinces to monitor the situation and implement necessary measures. These measures include mobilizing resources, placing all means on standby for intervention if needed, forming specialized reconnaissance, monitoring, and control teams equipped with necessary machinery and equipment, and deploying logistical resources, including aerial means, to enhance intervention operations.

The statement highlighted Morocco’s sufficient pesticide reserves to address any contingency, while taking all necessary precautions to protect ecosystems and preserve water, plant, and animal resources.

The Ministry of the Interior stressed that all relevant departments and sectors are continuing their efforts to closely monitor the situation, especially in areas prone to natural locust breeding, while taking all possible measures to limit and eradicate their spread.
