King Mohammed VI Renews the Appointment of Amna Bouayach as President of the National Human Rights Council

King Mohammed VI has renewed the appointment of Mrs. Amna Bouayach as President of the National Human Rights Council, reaffirming her significant role in defending human rights and freedoms and strengthening the role of the institution in protecting human rights in Morocco.

Amna Bouayach, born in 1957 in Tetouan, is a prominent human rights activist and politician who speaks four languages. She has held numerous national and international positions in the human rights field, including being a member of the Arab Organization for Human Rights and the Strategic Studies Expert Group at the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

She holds an advanced diploma in political economy and a master’s degree in economics from Mohammed V University in Rabat. She began her human rights activism at an early age, supporting the families of political prisoners during the “Years of Lead.” She also collaborated with sociologist Fatima Mernissi on women’s rights issues and published many articles on the subject in several languages.

Bouayach served as a media advisor in the government of Abdel Rahman Youssoufi and as the president of the Moroccan Organization for Human Rights, becoming the first woman to hold this position. She was also a member of the Advisory Committee for the Reform of the Moroccan Constitution in 2011 and served as Morocco’s ambassador to Sweden and Latvia in 2016. In 2018, she was appointed by the King as President of the National Human Rights Council.

The royal decision to reappoint the heads of both the Higher Council for Education, Training, and Scientific Research and the National Human Rights Council reflects the King’s commitment to ensuring these institutions are led by individuals with the skills and experience necessary to continue fulfilling their constitutional missions. This decision is part of the King’s ongoing dedication to reforming the national education system, viewed as a priority for building human capital, which is essential to supporting the development model he leads with wisdom and foresight. The King’s commitment also extends to the promotion and protection of human rights, enhancing Morocco’s international recognition for its achievements in this area.

Amna Bouayach is a member of several international human rights organizations and has participated in regional and international efforts to reform the Arab League and defend human rights. She has been awarded the French Legion of Honor, along with several Moroccan honors, in recognition of her human rights work and contributions to developing legislation related to fundamental freedoms.
