The Court of First Instance in Azilal issued a ruling on Thursday, sentencing three individuals who were arrested in connection with their protest against the unjustified increase in fish prices at the Ait Takla Azoud weekly market.
One of the defendants was sentenced to three months in prison, while the other two defendants were each sentenced to one month in prison.
The security authorities had arrested the defendants on Sunday, March 16, during their protest inside the weekly market, where they demanded that one of the vendors lower the prices. As the protest escalated, local forces and the royal gendarmerie intervened to disperse the crowd, leading to their arrest.
The Public Prosecutor at the Azilal Court decided to continue prosecuting the defendants while they were in custody, charging them with interfering with public duties and engaging in acts related to it, as well as inciting the commission of an offense through speeches and shouting in public places.
The case has sparked varied reactions within human rights and political circles. Some left-wing parties condemned the arrest of the protesters, considering their protest to have been peaceful, and called for their release, urging that citizens’ demands be dealt with in a more fair and just manner.
