University in Prisons Program: Empowering Inmates Through Education and Skills Development

The fourteenth edition of the “University in Prisons” program, organized by the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration in partnership with Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah University, saw significant participation from various academic and social stakeholders.

In this context, Professor Mustafa Ajali, President of Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah University, stated in an exclusive interview with Fes News that the university aims to solidify its role in the reintegration of prison inmates through academic training, pedagogical, and scientific guidance. He emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships with the General Delegation for Prison Administration and the regional delegation to provide prisoners with genuine opportunities to acquire the skills and knowledge needed for reintegration into society after their release.

Professor Ajali pointed out that this edition focused on highlighting the role of handicraft industries in Fes in the reintegration of prisoners, considering the city’s prominent role in this field. A series of academic presentations and training workshops, led by university professors and experts, were held to enhance the beneficiaries’ skills and equip them with practical tools to develop their professional paths.

In a related development, the president highlighted that the institution had made available to the inmates a collection of books and scientific publications, with 1,000 books donated by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. The initiative will also include contributions from the faculties of Law, Economics and Social Sciences, and Sharia, reflecting the university’s commitment to providing a comprehensive knowledge space within prisons, allowing inmates to continue their academic formation.

Moreover, a representative from the participating regional authority emphasized that this event reflects a collective commitment to improving the conditions of prisoners and preparing them for life after prison. He also pointed out that the region recently approved a 21 million dirham agreement to support the prison administration, aiming to enhance rehabilitation and training programs inside prisons, which will help inmates acquire new skills for the labor market.

One of the participating inmates, Mohamed, a student at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities in the English Studies department, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity provided by the university to continue his studies within the prison. He mentioned that exams were conducted in a good environment thanks to the university’s guidance and expressed hope for more technological tools and scientific research to help prisoners follow lessons and academic programs more effectively.

The “University in Prisons” program is one of the pioneering initiatives designed to enable inmates to complete their educational paths and enhance their skills as part of a comprehensive vision for their reintegration into society after serving their sentences. This is under the esteemed patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the primary supporter of these humanitarian and social initiatives.
