Morocco Exposes Algeria’s Manipulation of the Human Rights Issue at the UN Security Council

During a general debate session at the UN Security Council, Magda Motcho, Deputy Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Morocco to the United Nations, criticized the selective and biased approach taken by Algeria’s ambassador to the UN. This criticism came in response to his calls for expanding MINURSO’s mandate to include human rights monitoring. The Moroccan diplomat condemned what she described as Algeria’s “selective political exploitation” of the issue.

Motcho asserted that the Algerian ambassador’s intervention was merely an attempt to link human rights with MINURSO’s mission, calling it a political maneuver aimed at distorting the mission’s role. She clarified that MINURSO’s mandate, as clearly defined by the Security Council, is solely to oversee the ceasefire. Any attempt by Algeria to alter this mission, she added, reflects either ignorance or deliberate misinformation.

The Moroccan diplomat further pointed out that, in October 2024, the Security Council had categorically rejected the inclusion of a human rights monitoring mechanism within MINURSO’s mandate. She emphasized that this rejection was not arbitrary but based on a thorough assessment of the situation, as the human rights conditions in Morocco’s Sahara do not necessitate such a mechanism.

Responding to Algeria’s statements on human rights, Motcho questioned the situation in the Tindouf camps in Algeria, where residents face repression and are deprived of their basic rights. She highlighted Morocco’s consistent commitment to promoting human rights through constructive cooperation with the UN and its ongoing efforts to protect citizens’ rights.

Motcho also addressed the Algerian ambassador’s remarks on the “right to self-determination,” noting Algeria’s blatant contradiction in selectively applying this principle—advocating for it in some cases while rejecting it in others. This inconsistency, she argued, reflects Algeria’s double standards regarding the rights of peoples.

The Deputy Ambassador concluded by affirming that Morocco’s Sahara is an integral part of the Kingdom and will remain Moroccan forever, referencing the historical, cultural, and geographical ties that connect Morocco to its Sahara.
