Digital Content Observatory Warns: Do Not Click on Any Link Before Verifying It – Cyber Attacks Spread Through Apps, Websites, and Emails

The Digital Content Observatory has issued a strong warning to all Moroccan citizens about the increasing spread of malicious electronic links being circulated through instant messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram, as well as social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, in addition to email messages that trick users into thinking the content is enticing or essential.

The observatory emphasized that clicking on these links without verifying their source or checking them could lead to device hacking and theft of personal data, including passwords, banking information, or even full access to phones or computers.

Examples of fraudulent links include:

  • Links claiming you have won a prize.
  • Links offering fake job opportunities.
  • Links asking you to update your banking information.
  • Fraudulent links pretending to come from official institutions.
  • Links leading to imitation login pages for banks or social networks.

Digital Content Observatory’s Prevention Tips:

  • Do not click on any link before checking it.
  • Verify the website address (URL); if it seems unusual or contains unintelligible characters, avoid it.
  • Use free link-checking tools like:
    • Google Safe Browsing
    • VirusTotal
  • Do not trust any message that conveys urgency or promises attractive rewards.
  • Enable two-factor authentication for your accounts.
  • Regularly update security software on your phone or computer.
  • Only enter personal information on trusted and secure sites (HTTPS).
  • Periodically update your operating system to avoid security vulnerabilities.

Call for Collective Awareness:

The observatory concluded its warning by stressing that digital safety begins with individual awareness. It called on families, schools, and institutions to increase digital education, especially for those most vulnerable to these tactics, such as teenagers, seniors, and those not well-versed in technology.
