Protest by Waste Management Workers in Oulad Tayeb Over Delayed Wages

Fes News witnessed a protest this morning, Wednesday, March 26, 2025, organized by waste management workers in Oulad Tayeb, affiliated with the General Union of Workers in Morocco (UGTM) – Fes Regional Secretariat, demanding the timely payment of their overdue salaries.

The protesters expressed their frustration with the delay in the payment of their wages, which they claim have been accumulating for several months. They highlighted the negative impact this delay has had on their daily lives, especially in light of the economic challenges many are facing, including financial obligations to their families and banks. The workers confirmed that these difficult circumstances have led to difficulties in fulfilling their responsibilities, directly affecting their ability to meet their families’ needs.

The protesters further pointed out that the delay in salary payments reached its peak during the month of Ramadan, when they did not receive their pay despite the additional expenses associated with the holiday, such as buying necessities for the Eid celebration. “Ramadan passed without us receiving our salaries, which significantly impacted our living situation,” said one protester. Another added, “Our lives have been thrown into turmoil.”

While the workers continue their struggle to demand their rights, they confirmed that their protests would continue until their demands are met. The local governor, Mr. Basha, reached out to the workers, expressing sympathy for their situation and assuring them that efforts would be made to resolve the crisis. However, no official from the responsible company has reached out to address the issue, which has led to further frustration among the workers.

In related remarks, the workers emphasized that the waste management sector is a vital part of the country’s infrastructure, one that cannot be neglected. They called on officials to provide long-term solutions that would ensure their salaries are paid on time and improve their working conditions. One worker stated, “We put in significant effort to keep the city clean, yet we feel our rights are being ignored.”

At the end of the protest, the workers affirmed that they would not back down from their demands and would take further escalatory actions if the issue is not resolved as soon as possible.
