Digital Content Observatory Warns: Increasing Victims of Digital and Telephone Fraud in the Fes-Meknes Region Due to Greed for Quick Profits

Mr. Ahmed Al-Nemita Al-Bakkali, President of the Digital Content Observatory, warned about the rising number of victims of digital and telephone fraud in the Fes-Meknes region, stressing that most victims fall prey due to their greed for quick profits, along with a lack of digital awareness.

In this context, the observatory received a report from a woman who recounted receiving a phone call from an unknown person claiming he wanted to help her financially by depositing money into her bank card. Due to her digital illiteracy and lack of awareness about the risks of sharing sensitive information, she sent the numbers she received via phone to the fraudster, only to later discover that an amount of 6000 dirhams had been withdrawn from her bank account without her knowledge.

The observatory’s president confirmed that most of the stolen money in such criminal operations is used to buy phone top-ups. He pointed out that this type of fraud is easy to trace, stressing that telecom service providers bear part of the responsibility due to their indirect involvement in facilitating these operations, which makes it possible to recover the stolen funds in some cases.

He added that several citizens are also defrauded through suspicious digital applications that promise them unrealistic profits in a short period, only to disappear without a trace after draining the victims’ money.

Mr. Al-Nemita concluded his statement by urging citizens to exercise caution and not to fall for false promises, emphasizing that the observatory is ready to receive complaints and provide guidance in such cases.
