National Coalition of Civil Society Associations Issues Fiery Statement on Separatist Statements and Defense of National Constants

On March 22, 2025, the National Coalition of Civil Society Associations issued a strongly worded statement expressing its firm positions on the territorial integrity of the Kingdom and its categorical rejection of any attempt to undermine national constants, particularly what it described as separatist statements and encroachments on national sovereignty and the royal institution.

The coalition affirmed that “the Sahara is Moroccan and will remain so,” praising the Kingdom’s approach based on respecting international legitimacy and peacefully defending its causes in international forums, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God protect him.

The statement denounced “the emergence of some voices claiming to represent civil society while promoting separatist rhetoric and mocking the national sentiments of Moroccans, as if they were above the law,” emphasizing that civil society is present, vigilant, and will not accept any leniency in confronting such deviations.

Key points included in the statement:

  • Categorical rejection of any separatist statement, regardless of its source, and refusal to justify it with freedom of expression or human rights.
  • Considering territorial integrity a red line that cannot be compromised, and emphasizing that the royal institution is not subject to any encroachment.
  • Commending the seriousness of the Public Prosecutor’s Office in initiating legal proceedings against the head of an association with separatist tendencies that deals with the “Polisario” front and claims to defend human rights at the expense of Moroccan sovereignty.
  • Supporting accountability procedures against individuals from “renegade” groups that promote hatred against minorities, in violation of the principles of the Commander of the Faithful.
  • Demanding to know the outcome of complaint number 6873/2021 filed against journalist Hamid El Mahdaoui.
  • Condemning attempts to question the competence of the Moroccan security services by those whom the statement described as “mercenaries and electronic militias” driven by external agendas.
  • Expressing solidarity with the national media and completely rejecting accusations against national journalists or attempts to tarnish their human rights associations.
  • Supporting the interim committee for the press and publishing sector, which faces attempts at extortion, defamation, and threats, according to the statement.

The coalition concluded its statement by renewing its pride and appreciation for the Royal Armed Forces and the Moroccan security services, which it described as “vigilant and persevering in serving the King, the people, and the nation.”

The statement comes in a sensitive national context marked by the escalation of some disruptive rhetoric and attempts to disrupt the human rights and institutional path in the Kingdom, but civil society, according to the coalition, remains a solid bulwark against these attempts.
