The Ruling Party in Fes Under Fire for Corruption: The Largest Number of Elected Officials in Jail Belong to the Ruling Party, With PAM in Second Place

The political scene in the Fes region is currently witnessing an unprecedented level of tension and fracture within the local majority components. However, all eyes are particularly focused on the National Rally of Independents (RNI), which has seen the highest number of elected officials facing judicial action or imprisonment due to financial and administrative corruption cases. This marks an unprecedented event in the city’s contemporary political history.

RNI, which leads the national government, remains the most prominent political force in Fes. However, this numerical dominance has not translated into positive local governance outcomes. Instead, a series of scandals related to mismanagement, abuse of power, and suspicious contracts have emerged, involving party members, some of whom hold sensitive positions in local administration.

Following RNI, the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) ranks second in terms of the number of elected officials involved in corruption cases, while the Istiqlal Party comes third. The Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP) is in fourth place. As a result, all components of the local majority coalition in Fes are directly linked to corruption files currently under judicial review.

Sources reveal that several mayors, deputies, and employees closely associated with these parties are either facing legal action or are under provisional detention in cases involving “embezzlement of public funds, forgery, and bribery.” This has delivered a significant blow to the image of these parties locally and has sparked widespread anger and discontent among the residents of Fes.

Despite attempts at justification and de-escalation, the on-the-ground reality signals a deep crisis of trust in the local political scene. The absence of qualified political elites and the fragmentation of political discourse indicate that political restructuring may be on the horizon ahead of the 2026 legislative elections.
