The Moroccan national team secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Niger on Friday at the Stade Municipal in Oujda, during the fifth round of the African qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Atlas Lions entered the match determined to secure an early win, but they faced a well-organized Nigerien defense that closed spaces and relied on counterattacks. Despite multiple attempts, Morocco struggled to find the back of the net, with Nayef Aguerd’s shot hitting the post. The first half ended in a goalless draw.
Niger stunned the hosts with an early goal in the 48th minute, scored by Mohamed Moumouni. This prompted the Moroccan team to push forward in search of an equalizer, which came quickly through Ismael Saibari in the 60th minute.
Achraf Hakimi and his teammates continued to apply pressure on Niger’s defense, aiming for a winning goal, while the visitors relied on counterattacks. Just as the match seemed headed for a draw, Bilal El Khannouss netted a last-minute goal, securing a crucial three points for Morocco.
With this victory, Morocco strengthened its lead at the top of the group with 12 points, while Niger remained in second place with six points.
