Starting April: Tobacco Prices Continue to Rise, Smokers Face New Increases

The prices of manufactured tobacco in Morocco are set to increase again starting April 1st, with some cigarette packs expected to rise by 1 to 2 dirhams. This comes after a price hike was already implemented in early January 2025.

According to industry sources, the Committee for the Approval of Manufactured Tobacco Prices met this week to review price adjustment requests submitted by the three companies operating in the Moroccan market: Moroccan Tobacco Company (SMT), Philip Morris International (PMI), and Japan Tobacco International (JTI). After deliberations, the committee agreed to modify the prices, increasing the cost of various locally produced brands—excluding luxury brands—as well as an anticipated rise in the price of “Mu’assel” (shisha tobacco).

The official list of new prices is scheduled to be published in the Official Gazette on April 1st. Generally, the prices of manufactured tobacco are adjusted once a year, except in exceptional cases related to tax changes, such as the one that occurred last January.

These increases are part of the gradual tax schedule imposed on tobacco, which was introduced under the Finance Law of 2022. The law aims to progressively adjust the Domestic Consumption Tax (TIC) on tobacco products until 2026.
