The National Office of Airports (ONDA) is preparing to launch the construction of a unique new terminal at Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca, with an estimated investment cost of 15 billion dirhams. On Thursday, the office announced the start of this massive project, designed in the shape of an “H” and inspired by the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. The terminal aims to meet the requirements of a “HUB” operation in line with international standards, particularly in terms of connection times, baggage handling, and boarding bridge utilization.
The new terminal will have a capacity of 20 million passengers per year and is expected to be completed by 2029, marking an “infrastructural revolution in Morocco’s airport sector.”
The terminal will “address the needs of the projected growth in air traffic, particularly that related to Royal Air Maroc’s development program,” according to the ONDA statement. It will also be connected to the high-speed rail line (LGV) between Kenitra and Marrakech, providing travelers with “quick and seamless access to Morocco’s major cities.”
Modeled after the world’s largest international airports, this future infrastructure aims to “enhance transport intermodality and improve the passenger experience.” The rail connection will “not only significantly reduce travel times between Casablanca and other strategic hubs but also support the growth of air traffic by facilitating access to the airport for both domestic and international travelers.”
The project will include “a new parallel runway measuring 3,700 meters in length and 45 meters in width, along with associated taxiways and aeronautical infrastructure, as well as aircraft parking spaces and a new control tower standing approximately 42 meters tall,” according to ONDA.
Additionally, to optimize mobility, comfort, and passenger reception, the terminal will be “spread across three main levels and will feature a green oasis, commercial areas, a large duty-free zone, VIP lounges, and a hotel, all offering stunning views of the runways.”
Tenders for the construction of the terminal will be launched in the coming months, while the earthworks tender has already been issued, the office concluded.
