Nizar Baraka: Speculators Are Draining Moroccans’ Pockets… An Ethical Economic Charter to Combat Price Hikes Is Now a Necessity!

Nizar Baraka, Secretary-General of the Istiqlal Party and Minister of Equipment and Water, has called for the establishment of an ethical economic charter to tackle the widespread commercial speculation and greed in markets. He highlighted that some intermediaries are now taking up to 50% of the final prices of agricultural products, while farmers receive only 30%, exacerbating the financial burden on Moroccan consumers.

Speaking as a guest on the “Nuqta ila As-Satr” program on Al Aoula TV on Tuesday evening, Baraka emphasized the need to condition state subsidies with clear criteria. He pointed out that sheep importers who benefited from government support during the last Eid al-Adha still chose to sell livestock at high prices, disregarding citizens’ purchasing power.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s determination to combat monopolies and price manipulation by reducing the number of intermediaries in wholesale markets and strengthening monitoring mechanisms. This is particularly crucial as Ramadan approaches, with previous inspections revealing weight and quality fraud, along with unjustified price increases.

Regarding potential solutions, Baraka clarified that price caps are not an effective measure, as they would harm small farmers in favor of importers. Instead, he stressed the importance of promoting economic transparency and establishing ethical regulations to prevent illegal speculation.

He also noted that the Istiqlal Party was the first to call for an urgent meeting of the government majority to discuss the crisis and implement measures to protect citizens from market exploitation. Baraka reiterated the party’s commitment to advocating for fair pricing and safeguarding Moroccans’ purchasing power.
