Bourita: Gaza Cannot Be Rebuilt Without a Ceasefire, and the Palestinian Authority is the Only One with the Right to Determine Its Future

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, participated, under the instructions of King Mohammed VI, the Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, in the extraordinary session of the Arab League, held to discuss the developments of the Palestinian issue.

This session took place at a critical and difficult time, focusing on the situation in Gaza following the ongoing Israeli attacks for about a year and a half, which have caused massive destruction and large numbers of victims. It also addressed the fragile ceasefire declaration, which faces significant challenges, in addition to many initiatives and ideas that could affect the future of Gaza and the region as a whole.

In a press statement, Bourita explained that Morocco’s stance on the Palestinian issue is steadfast and clear, with King Mohammed VI elevating it to the level of a national cause. He also pointed out that Morocco consistently supports all initiatives that could help empower the Palestinian people to achieve their legitimate rights.

Key Determinants of Morocco’s Stance

Bourita outlined four main principles that form Morocco’s position regarding the developments in the Palestinian issue:

  1. Gaza is Part of Palestinian Territory: Bourita emphasized that Gaza, like the West Bank, is an integral part of Palestinian land. Therefore, the right to determine its future exclusively belongs to the Palestinian people.
  2. The Palestinian Authority Holds the Initiative: Bourita stated that the Palestinian people and the Palestinian Authority are the only ones with the right to decide Gaza’s future and how to handle the current situation.
  3. Establishing a Ceasefire: Before moving to the reconstruction phase, a ceasefire must first be established, humanitarian aid must be provided, and initial agreements reached on halting the aggression must be implemented.
  4. Reconstruction Requires a Political Vision: Bourita affirmed that the reconstruction of Gaza is not just a technical and financial issue but also requires a political vision. This vision should include the active engagement of all regional and Palestinian parties.

Jerusalem and the West Bank in Morocco’s Stance

In this context, Bourita affirmed that Morocco cannot overlook the situation in the West Bank and Jerusalem. He clarified that King Mohammed VI’s position, as Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, focuses on maintaining the legal and historical status of Jerusalem and ensuring its continued role as a place of coexistence. He also expressed Morocco’s support for the steadfastness of Jerusalem’s residents in these difficult circumstances, referring to the statement issued by the Arab summit, the “Cairo Declaration,” which reflects strong support for the Al-Quds Committee and its pivotal role in this matter.

Reconstruction Plan

Bourita revealed that the Arab summit has adopted a plan to rebuild Gaza, and work on its implementation will begin soon. He highlighted the importance of providing international support for this plan, emphasizing the need to create a comprehensive political framework that aligns with the reconstruction process. This framework should include setting a budget and timelines for its implementation. He also stressed the need to overcome existing obstacles and unite the Palestinian ranks while adopting a political vision that leads to a two-state solution and the establishment of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Through this stance, Morocco demonstrates its unwavering commitment to the Palestinian cause and reaffirms its continued support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, within a comprehensive plan that promotes peace and stability in the region.
