Marrakech fishmonger’s closure ignites controversy and reaches parliament “Is this a reckoning against those who expose corruption?”

The decision by the authorities to close the fish shop of Marrakech youth Abdel-Elah, known on social media for his low prices, sparked widespread debate among citizens, and many considered the measure a “punishment” for this vendor, who exposed the unjustified high prices in the fish market, which pushed the issue to parliament.

In this regard, Fatima Tamni, a parliamentarian from the Left Federation, sent a written question to the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forestry, criticizing what she described as “settling accounts against those who expose corruption, instead of opening a serious investigation into the speculation that led to the high prices of fish.”

In her letter, Tamni emphasized that exposing corruption in Morocco has become a danger to its owners, whether they are ordinary citizens, small traders, or even civil society activists, noting that the young Abdelilah was selling sardines for five dirhams per kilogram in Marrakech, which exposed the monopoly imposed by large traders, who buy sardines from fishermen for only three dirhams, only to resell them at prices up to twenty dirhams per kilogram.

This practice reflects “unethical profit that harms the purchasing power of citizens,” especially as Ramadan approaches, when the demand for fish increases. She also questioned why a vendor who revealed the real prices was harassed, while no serious investigation was opened into speculation and high prices, noting that the authorities justified the closure for health reasons, but questioned whether safety standards are applied to all shops, including supermarkets.

In light of the growing popular discontent over rising prices, Tamini called on the government to reveal the actual measures it will take to confront speculators and ensure that those who expose corruption are not targeted, instead of continuing the policy of “silencing mouths,” which deepens the crisis of trust between citizens and oversight bodies.
