Controversy over video selling sardines in Marrakech for 5 dirhams per kilogram + (video)

A video clip circulated on social media platforms showing a young Moroccan man named “Abdelilah” selling sardines at a price not exceeding five dirhams per kilogram in a Marrakech market, which sparked widespread controversy among followers.

This incident comes in light of the continuous rise in fish prices in Moroccan markets, prompting many to question the authenticity of the video and the reasons for this low price compared to the prevailing prices.

In a media statement, Abdellah, known as “Abdo,” explained that his goal was not to stir up controversy, but he decided not to reveal the prices of the fish he sells in the future, to avoid any unexpected reactions from some merchants.

He confirmed that the price he offered was real and not a rumor as claimed by some fish traders, noting that prices are subject to the law of supply and demand, which prompted him to be cautious about disclosing prices for fear of any harassment.

Abdelilah explained that his offer of sardines at a low price coincided with a period that witnessed a general decline in prices, adding that he relies on a limited profit margin that does not exceed one dirham per kilogram and always tries to take into account market conditions.

This controversy comes in the context of the ongoing debate over the high prices of fish in Morocco, where citizens complain about the high prices despite the abundance of fish wealth in the country.
