As part of ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and enhance national stability, Moroccan security forces, represented by the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) under the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST), have located and identified a logistical support base stocked with weapons and ammunition in the Errachidia province. This cache is suspected to be linked to an ISIS-affiliated terror cell recently dismantled, which was operating in the Sahel region.
According to an official statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) and DGST, field inspections and advanced technical operations revealed a rugged area at the base of a rocky hill, used as a covert storage site for weapons and ammunition. Due to the challenging terrain and unpaved access routes, specialized logistical equipment was deployed to facilitate access and conduct thorough searches following security protocols for handling potential terrorist threats, particularly in locations suspected of containing explosives and firearms.
The security operation utilized police-trained detection dogs, specialized metal detection devices, explosive-tracing technology, robotic bomb-detection units, and an advanced X-ray scanning system. The field inspection and sweeping process lasted over three hours, resulting in the discovery of a significant weapons cache, meticulously buried at the base of the rocky hill, wrapped in plastic bags and newspapers from Mali dated January 27, 2025.
The confiscated arsenal included two AK-47 rifles with loaded magazines, two shotguns, ten handguns of various calibers, and a large quantity of live ammunition. All seized weapons and ammunition were cataloged and sent to the National Police Forensic Laboratory for ballistic analysis to trace their origin and trafficking routes.
Initial investigations suggest that a high-ranking ISIS operative smuggled these weapons into the Errachidia site and shared its coordinates with members of the dismantled terror cell, who were planning to retrieve and use them in attacks threatening national security.
Authorities confirmed that investigations are still ongoing under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office to uncover all potential links of this terror cell and its affiliations with ISIS’s African branch operating in the Sahel. This operation is part of Morocco’s proactive counterterrorism strategy aimed at safeguarding national security and preempting any terrorist plots targeting civilians and state institutions.
