In a Meeting at HEM Rabat, Benkirane Makes Controversial Statements About His Past Relationship with Akhannouch

During a conference organized by HEM Rabat last night, Abdelilah Benkirane, Secretary-General of the Justice and Development Party (PJD), made strong and controversial remarks about his past relationship with Aziz Akhannouch, the current Prime Minister of Morocco.

Benkirane revealed that he was the one who initially proposed Akhannouch for the position of Minister of Agriculture during his first government, believing in his competence and capabilities. However, he now sees that Akhannouch’s appetite for power and economic dominance has expanded in an unprecedented way.

He explained that Akhannouch was initially reluctant to join his government and that King Mohammed VI personally inquired about his suitability for the role. Benkirane responded that Akhannouch was a good choice for the position. He added:
“I was the one who suggested him to His Majesty, but at first, he refused. However, when the King called him, he quickly accepted and rushed back.”

Benkirane acknowledged that Akhannouch was highly regarded during his first term as Minister of Agriculture, being seen as a competent and capable figure. However, he argued that things changed dramatically after Akhannouch became Prime Minister, as he allegedly began expanding his influence and control over the economy.

Benkirane launched harsh criticism against the Prime Minister, accusing him of consolidating control over key economic sectors, particularly the fuel industry. He referenced a high-profile deal involving fuel purchases worth 24.4 billion MAD, questioning whether this aligned with fair market competition.

He further claimed that Akhannouch’s desire to dominate the market was not new, alleging that even during his tenure as Minister of Agriculture, he resisted oversight of his ministry. Benkirane cited the Rural Development Fund, which had been subject to widespread controversy, as an example of how Akhannouch managed sensitive files without sufficient accountability.

Benkirane also spoke about the growing tensions between himself and Akhannouch, particularly after the latter became Prime Minister. He accused Akhannouch of developing an insatiable hunger for power, stating:
“Ever since he became Prime Minister, his appetite has expanded excessively—he wants to take everything.”

Benkirane expressed concerns over conflicts of interest, particularly in public contracts and the energy sector, questioning whether Akhannouch respects fair competition and transparency. He warned against the dangers of economic power being concentrated in the hands of a political leader who also holds a government position.

Concluding his speech, Benkirane indirectly addressed Akhannouch, emphasizing the need to maintain political and economic balance. He insisted that politics is not just about personal gain but a responsibility and trust toward the people.

He warned:
“Politics is not about serving personal interests; it is a responsibility and a duty towards the people.”
