The Joint Military Committee between Morocco and Mali held its first meeting on Monday, February 17, 2025, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Defense and Veterans Affairs in Mali. The meeting was attended by a high-level delegation from the Royal Armed Forces of Morocco, led by Brigadier General Abdelghani Mouhib, from the General Inspectorate of the Royal Armed Forces of Morocco. The Malian side was chaired by Brigadier General Mahamadou Moussaouli Samaké, Strategic Advisor to the General Staff of the Malian Armed Forces.
The meeting, which will last for three days, aims to strengthen military cooperation between Morocco and Mali in several areas, including joint military training, equipment modernization, and the exchange of expertise in security and intelligence. This meeting aligns with the strategic visions to enhance security and stability in the Sahel region, which faces increasing security challenges.
In his opening remarks, General Oumar Diarra, Chief of the General Staff of the Malian Armed Forces, welcomed the Moroccan delegation, emphasizing the importance of this meeting in strengthening the fraternal ties between the two countries. Diarra noted that this meeting reflects the commitment of both nations to addressing shared security challenges and called for fostering teamwork and constructive cooperation to achieve common goals.
For his part, Brigadier General Abdelghani Mouhib, head of the Moroccan delegation, expressed his gratitude for the efforts made by the senior authorities of both countries to enhance military partnership. He affirmed that Morocco and Mali have maintained strong and multidimensional cooperation ties for decades, highlighting Morocco’s steadfast commitment to supporting the stability of the Sahel region and assisting it in facing security challenges.
Mouhib added: “This meeting is not just a step towards strengthening military cooperation but also a reaffirmation of the fraternal and friendly bonds between our peoples and armed forces. We are committed to continuing to work together to achieve security and stability in our region.”
This meeting comes at a time when the Sahel region is witnessing an escalation in security threats, including the spread of terrorist groups and organized crime. The meeting is expected to result in new cooperation agreements in areas such as military training, intelligence sharing, and military equipment modernization, which will enhance the defense capabilities of both countries.
