Marrakech Hosts Global Summit to Save Lives … Ministerial Conference Charts a New Road Safety Strategy

As part of international efforts to enhance road safety and reduce traffic accidents, the fourth edition of the Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety kicked off this morning, Tuesday, February 18, 2025, in Marrakech. The event is held under the high patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and organized by the Ministry of Transport and Logistics in partnership with the World Health Organization, with support from the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety. Taking place from February 18 to 20, 2025, under the theme “Commit for Life,” this global gathering brings together leaders, policymakers, and experts to discuss ways to improve road safety and reduce fatal accidents.

The conference boasts high-level international participation, with over 100 ministers representing key sectors such as interior affairs, transport, infrastructure, and health. These officials are leading discussions on policies and strategies aimed at creating safer roads. More than 2,700 participants, including 600 international experts, are attending, along with representatives from UN agencies and global organizations such as the World Bank, the International Transport Forum, the International Automobile Federation, the International Road Assessment Programme, the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety, and the International Youth Organization for Road Safety. With such a strong international presence, the conference seeks to strengthen collective commitment to combating road traffic accidents, a global challenge that requires concerted efforts and concrete measures.

The conference aims to make significant progress in reducing road traffic fatalities by sharing successful experiences and developing sustainable strategies based on modern scientific and technical approaches. The event is expected to culminate in the adoption of the “Marrakech Declaration,” which will serve as a roadmap for drafting a UN resolution on road safety. This aligns with the global objective of reducing road traffic deaths by 50% by 2030, in line with international commitments under the Decade of Action for Road Safety.

By hosting this prestigious event, Morocco reaffirms its strong commitment to ensuring safe and sustainable mobility and demonstrates its leadership in adopting effective policies to curb road traffic casualties. The conference is also part of the country’s broader efforts to strengthen sectoral diplomacy and highlight its active role in international road safety initiatives. Furthermore, the event presents a valuable opportunity to foster global partnerships, launch impactful initiatives to save lives, and promote a shared responsibility culture in road safety, in alignment with sustainable development goals and the universal right to safe mobility.
