Mali and Morocco Forge Closer Military Ties with New Joint Commission

Mali and Morocco are deepening their military cooperation through the establishment of a Joint Military Commission. The inaugural meeting of the commission took place in Bamako on February 17, 2025, bringing together military experts from both nations.

The commission, co-chaired by Brigadier Generals Mahamadou Massaoulé Samaké of Mali and Abdelghani Mouhib of Morocco, will focus on strengthening bilateral military relations. This initiative underscores both countries’ commitment to enhancing collaboration in the defense sector.

Morocco has increasingly played a strategic role in promoting stability within the Sahel region. By leveraging its unique position, historical ties, and growing economic partnerships, Morocco aims to foster greater cross-border security cooperation. The Joint Military Commission presents an opportunity to improve military interoperability and consolidate relations through the exchange of expertise.

This strengthened relationship comes at a time when regional security is of utmost importance. Mali is a member of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), along with Niger and Burkina Faso. Morocco remains committed to joint action in Africa to serve the vital interests of its citizens.

This move follows similar efforts by Morocco to strengthen military ties with other African nations, such as the Central African Republic.
