The Staten Island College of the City University of New York, in collaboration with the Consulate General of the Kingdom of Morocco in New York, is preparing to organize the third edition of the international symposium on the Moroccan explorer Mustapha Al Azmouri, known as Estebanico, on February 21, 2025, under the theme “The Atlantic Connection: Tracing the footsteps of an exceptional African explorer”.
The symposium is part of an academic initiative that aims to highlight the pivotal role Estebanico played in the exploration of the New World during the 16th century. This third edition is a continuation of previous efforts, with the first edition held at the City University of New York in February 2024, and the second edition in the Moroccan city of Azemmour in August of the same year.
The symposium seeks to promote a deeper understanding of the historical relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the United States of America through an academic approach in line with the Atlantic Initiative launched by King Mohammed VI, which aims to consolidate strategic ties between African countries bordering the Atlantic Ocean and their counterparts on the other side, including the United States.
Mustapha Al-Azmouri, who was the first Moroccan and African to cross North America from Florida to Mexico in 1527, embodies this historical extension, and the symposium seeks to highlight his role as a cultural bridge between Africa and America, reread his personality from an academic perspective based on reliable historical documents and sources, and review African influences on American culture.
The symposium is organized in collaboration with multiple entities, including the Consulate General of the Kingdom of Morocco in New York, the City University of New York, Staten Island College, Royal Air Maroc, OCP Group, and Moroccan students at CUNY, in the framework of supporting scientific research and promoting cultural exchange between Morocco and the United States.
The organizers invited researchers and those interested in the history of African-American cultural interaction to attend this symposium, which will be held at the Staten Island College Art Center on February 21, 2025, and is a unique opportunity to exchange knowledge about a historical figure who embodies the deep reach of Morocco in the Atlantic landscape.
