The Fès Meknes regional office of the National Union of Café and Restaurant Owners expressed its great dissatisfaction after the decisions taken by the Fès Community Council during the February session, related to amending the tax decision on the occupation of sidewalks and regulating the exploitation of temporary collective public property without construction.
In an official statement issued by the regional office, it considered that the decisions taken by the mayor of Fez were “improvised” and ill-considered, indicating that they will deepen the crisis of the cafes and restaurants sector, which is still suffering from the repercussions of the Corona pandemic and the economic recession in the city of Fez, and the statement explained that these measures will further exacerbate the situation, leading to a further decline in the economic activity of the sector.
The statement also pointed out that the process of demolishing storefronts in the city was carried out without consulting professionals or setting clear milestones for this process, which further deepened the crisis and increased the number of closed shops. Idris Al-Hakim, head of the regional office of the National University of Café and Restaurant Owners in Fez Meknes, explained in a statement to a media outlet that more than half of the cafes in the city of Fez were forced to close their doors due to the works taking place near their shops, which negatively affected their business movement.
Al-Hakim stressed that the decisions that include increasing the tax fees for occupying sidewalks at this time, especially in light of the economic crisis, represent an additional burden on professionals, noting that coffee prices in Fez range between 6 and 12 dirhams, which makes any increase in fees unjustified in light of the difficult conditions in the sector.
The owners of cafes and restaurants in Fez have decided to categorically reject these decisions and will not hesitate to resort to protests if their demands are not met. He also added that there are shops whose facades were demolished illegally, without consultation with the professionals, which led to the owners of the shops suffering double trouble.
In conclusion, the regional office announced that an expanded meeting will be held in the near future to take the necessary measures and take the appropriate decision if the professionals’ demands continue to be ignored.
