“Fatwa” chaos on social media draws parliament’s ire; Ministry of Religious Endowments holds consumer responsible

Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs Ahmed Tawfiq warned of the chaos in the field of fatwa due to the emergence of unqualified people who give fatwas on religious matters, stressing that the era of freedom of expression has allowed everyone to talk about religious matters, but the responsibility lies primarily with the consumer to verify the source of the fatwa.

During the oral question session in the House of Representatives, the minister stressed the need to distinguish between fatwa and guidance, as fatwa concerns new issues that require jurisprudence, while guidance includes practical religious guidance such as how to perform worship and the division of inheritance.

Al-Tawfiq emphasized that consumers are responsible for ensuring the authenticity of the religious source they rely on, just as they are keen on the quality of the products they buy, warning against giving in to the fatwas of unqualified people.

He explained that the Supreme Scientific Council is the only official body authorized to issue fatwas in Morocco, and despite the great progress in awareness, some voices are still trying to confuse this field.
