Fes is currently grappling with an unprecedented crisis in the urban transport sector, with accusations directed at the municipality for causing a paralysis in the service due to delays in paying City Bus company, which has directly affected workers and citizens, leading to threats of a strike that could exacerbate the situation.
Severe Crisis and Mutual Accusations
According to information obtained by Fes News from informed sources within the municipality, the latter has failed to pay over 21.8 million dirhams in dues to the company, despite the Ministry of the Interior having transferred part of this support to the municipality since December 2022.
These payments relate to expenses for student and school transportation, as well as services provided to local authorities. Meanwhile, City Bus is facing severe financial problems due to rising fuel prices and the non-implementation of contractual provisions that call for a gradual increase in transportation fares. This has led to accumulated losses and delayed salaries.
Workers Face Uncertain Future
Workers at the company, who have not been paid regularly, are now directly confronting the crisis, with many of them not being reported to the National Social Security Fund and the suspension of health insurance benefits, leaving their social situation precarious.
In a statement to Fes News, one worker said:
“We don’t know what will happen in the coming days, but we will not accept being victims of this conflict between the company and the municipality. If no solution is found quickly, we will resort to a strike, even though that’s the last thing we want.”
Fes’s Reputation at Stake
On the other hand, citizens continue to suffer due to the severe shortage of buses and overcrowding at bus stations, which only increases their dissatisfaction with the current management of the urban transport file.
In light of these facts, the question remains: How long will the municipality of Fes remain unable to resolve this crisis? Will the relevant authorities intervene to prevent the collapse of this vital service that affects the lives of thousands of citizens?
To be continued…
